Description
Village Sign - Blo Norton - Richard Reeve
The village of Blo Norton lies in the Brecklands, a district of South Norfolk, in East Anglia, England.
As with many villages, the traditional carved wooden sign has been erected to represent the village. It depicts a farmer using a sickle to cut sheaves of corn with a ram and ewe behind him. in the background stands St Andrews Church. Beneath this agrarian scene are two fish representing the bounty of the river Little Ouse which runs through the village boundary.
There has been a settlement here since Roman times and this small village also hides a moated Elizabethan manor house where Virginia Woolf stayed and was inspired to write the short story, The Journal of Miss Joan Martyn, in 1906.
The village is also part of the Sikh Heritage Trail as the manor was lived in by Prince (Freddy) Frederick Victor Duleep Singh, son of the last Maharajah of the Sikh Empire, Duleep Singh. Prince Freddy lived here for the last 20 years of his life following a very patriotic career in the British Army.
