Sallie Gardner at a Gallop - Horse in Motion
Back in 1874 Eadward Muybridge used a series of 24 cameras set at a shutter speed of 1/2000 second, spaced 27 inches apart and triggered by tripwires to take photographs of a horse galloping at 36 miles per hour. This demonstrated once and for all that all four legs of the horse were off the ground at one point during a gallop - something that had apparently been debated for years, and allegedly resulting in wagers being placed on the outcome.
When the photographs were projected on a screen, or viewed using a zoopraxiscope, this could be described as an early movie.
The horse in this case was Sallie Gardner.
I am a visual story teller based in southern Pennsylvania, USA and my imagery is inspired from everyday objects and situations I encounter through my travels.
