How can you fail to be moved by the huge copper statue of Libertas, flame held aloft, crowned with a seven pointed diadem and striding with majesty towards the River Hudson with a copy of the Declaration of Independence in her left hand and broken chains at her feet. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and built by the great engineer Gustave Eiffel, this is one of the most recognizable icons in the world.
